Ella Thrupp is a practicing artist based on the east coast of Australia. She is known primarily by her ‘floating’ technique, in which she creates many alternating layers of acrylic paint and clear glazing. This creates a floating effect in the artwork, and allows for the build up of semi-transparent layers to build softness and luminosity in the artwork. As a result, these works have been described as moving and breathing, and often appear differently when very close to far away. Her works are emotional and thoughtful, focusing on light, colour and iridescence. They often feature natural themes, including celestial spaces, the ocean, as well as human feeling, whether it is love, joy, bereavement or sadness. Ella’s inspirations include the luminism movement, the romanticism movement and the renaissance art period.
